Coronavirus End of War Is Near but Do Not Be Last Soldier to Be Killed

Coronavirus vaccine success is perhaps the happiest news ever since the pandemic hit our world in late 2019. It is a great cause of celebration for all the countries of the world that we were able to achieve a cure of a horrible disease that has no description in the books of history of mankind. Flu epidemic of 1918 killed more Americans than this one but it took longer time and countries like India or other parts of the world were not affected.

But a remarkable quote from Dr. Fauci, head of the Infection Control Agency of US Government is worth paying serious attention to. He said:

“DON’T TAKE THE VACCINES AS AN INVITATION TO THROW CAUTION TO THE WIND, HE SAID. “IT’S KIND OF LIKE THE LAST SOLDIER TO GET KILLED IN A WAR WHEN THE WAR IS GOING TO BE OVER SOON. YOU DON’T WANT TO BE THAT PERSON.”

We in India must hear this message loud and clear. “Aam admi” does not listen and governments, be it local police, district administration, state or the almighty central government are failing to control the massacre of our people for many reasons. Police danda has limit in controlling mass madness or religious and marriage seasons when live stream of police hitting are viewed in millions on internet. Governments are worried about a frozen economy. Businesses and schools are pushing for opening the life, because they are facing bankruptcies.

But we must understand that hospitals are overwhelmed with masses rushing for hospital beds and dying. Delhi’s Karol Bagh or Jodhpur Nai Sarak markets are so filled with people that an inch of empty space is impossible to find. Marriage ceremonies gathering of 100 people are given easily. Police puts condition of mask on these gatherings. But how on earth are we expected to eat with mask on our face?

Do we realize that one person can infect upto 50,000 people? How can we allow such flexible rules?

Governments must find ways to enforce these rules under criminal law. We are running out of time. An ordinary household can not live in a bubble of seclusion.

All this is happening when unaccountable number of people are dying (hard to get right stats) and many times more will have after effects if they are lucky to return home alive.

“This will probably be the darkest period,” Julia Marcus, an epidemiologist at Harvard Medical School, declared. “I think we can expect probably the most difficult moment in the pandemic to be these next few months, both in terms of challenges related to social isolation and economic devastation but also sickness and death.”

Common man in America will perhaps get vaccine in next four months. India will not be too much behind. Logistics and  technology transfer is a difficult but not impossible task. India must not lose its patience for next few more months. December and January will be the hardest in our future. Next three months should be watched most cautiously. But we all have a social responsibility to minimize social contact and limit contacts to immediate family members only. We do not want to be the last soldier to be killed before the war is won and ended. Victory, the vaccine, has already been declared.
